Knowing how to prepare your business and life for time off and going OOO is essential—because let’s be real, life happens. Because you’re not just running a business—you’re also running a home.
Last week, I found out I’d be out of office for an entire week for the Nuuds campaign. (Exciting? Absolutely. A little overwhelming? Also yes.)
Because here’s the thing—I’m not just prepping my business to run without me. I’m a mama of two, with two kids in sports, a home to manage, and a husband who, while amazing, is not as systemized as I am. (But let’s be clear—he’s a DAD, not a babysitter.)
And that got me thinking…
What if YOU had to step away tomorrow?
Would your business and personal life run smoothly, or would everything come crashing down?
If the thought of being OOO for a few days (or a week) stresses you out, it’s time to put some systems in place. Here’s how I’m prepping both my business and my home so everything stays on track while I’m gone.
Setting Up Your Business to Run Without You
Your business should work for you—not rely on you every second of the day. If stepping away means everything stops, it’s time to make some changes.
Automate What You Can
Schedule content ahead of time. Your audience shouldn’t even notice you’re gone.
Set up email autoresponders. Let people know when you’ll be back.
Automate invoices & payments. Recurring revenue shouldn’t pause just because you’re away.
Delegate & Document
If you have a team: Make sure they know exactly who’s responsible for what.
If you’re a solopreneur: Write out simple step-by-step instructions for someone to step in if needed.
Set Clear Client Expectations
Let clients know when you’ll be away and what they can expect.
Have a plan in place for urgent issues (or make it clear there are no urgent issues while you’re out).
Prepping Your Home & Family Before You Leave
Because let’s be honest—when moms step away, we have to prep twice as much to make sure things don’t completely fall apart.
Sync Schedules & Communication
Make sure the family calendar is updated. I’m a planner, and my husband? Not so much. That’s why we make sure schedules are clear so no one is left scrambling.
Write out the game plan for kids’ activities, meals, and routines. Even if it’s just a quick breakdown of the essentials, it helps keep things running smoothly.
Make Meals Easy
Prep quick & easy dinners. Freezer meals, prepped groceries, or simple dinner plans make a huge difference.
Stock up on essentials. Snacks, school lunch supplies, and anything that would cause a “Mom, we’re out of…” crisis.
Prepare the Kids
Talk about your trip ahead of time. Kids thrive on routine, so let them know what’s happening.
Create a fun countdown or plan FaceTime check-ins.
Leave little surprises. Notes, special treats, or something small to make them feel connected.
Actually Allowing Yourself to Step Away
You did the prep. You set up the systems. Now comes the hardest part—letting go.
It’s easy to keep checking in, answering emails, or stressing about what’s happening while you’re gone. But trust that the systems you put in place will work.
And if something doesn’t go perfectly? You’ll adjust for next time.
At the end of the day, being able to take time off—without everything falling apart—is a sign of a healthy business and a well-run home.

Taking time off shouldn’t feel impossible. Whether you’re traveling for work, taking a family vacation, or handling something unexpected, your business and personal life should be set up to run smoothly—even when you’re not there.
